The Supreme Court of the United States is set to deliver their ruling on King v. Burwell any day now. At stake is the very thread holding Obamacare together. Republicans have yet another opportunity to repeal Obamacare once and for all, but most have motioned they will instead try and save it.
Insurance premiums for many Tennesseans have almost doubled, and countless people have lost their insurance and doctors because of Obamacare.
Last legislative session, Governor Haslam attempted to expand Obamacare in Tennessee, but was defeated by the conservative state legislature. The state legislature is in hibernation until next January. However, some will likely try and expand Obamacare again on the state level next year.
For now, the focus has shifted to the federal government. You wont find a single Republican that ran for office last year that didn’t promise to repeal Obamacare, but we already know not to trust many of Tennessee’s Republicans like Sen. Lamar Alexander, Sen. Bob Corker, Rep. Diane Black, etc. who all voted to fund Obamacare.
How will they vote in coming months? Will they kill the law in its entirety and return power back to the state of Tennessee, where it belongs? Don’t hold your breath.
In typical fashion, these legislators and others will likely save the law. Their excuse? “We have to wait until a Republican is in the White House.” The President is not a dictator. The executive branch is one of three co-equal branches. Republicans have full control of the Senate, full control of the House and the Court will likely rule against Obamacare in the coming days. No excuse exists to not completely repeal Obamacare.
Healthcare is a power reserved to the states, not the federal government. It is time to not only repeal Obamacare, but also return countless dollars held by the feds to the states. If the United States Post Office cannot get mail from my house to yours without going billions of dollars into debt, why would anyone believe they can manage healthcare? Tennessee conservatives need to keep their eyes on every single last Tennessee Republican and hold them accountable. Last election cycle was a mandate against, not in favor of, President Obama’s policies.
